Chapter Six

Dash to Here

The following is an excerpt from Chapter Six of Mama Root: The Old Woman of Loop Road

~~~     “’Pon layin’ eyes on such a hideous creature that man soiled hisself an’ took ta’ whimperin’ an’ cryin’ like a baby.  He was so fear struck he couldn’t move, but that changed first time the horse charged him.  She went flyin’ past him, hooves poundin’ the dirt, stretched out her neck an’ bit a chunk o’ flesh off the side o’ his face, so much you could see his teeth on that side.  He let out a yowl an’ took off lickety-split towards the house with one hand held ta’ his face tryin’ ta’ stem the bleedin’.  Dash ta’ Here was comin’ hot on his heels, her body all sweatin’ an’ glowin’ in the moonlight.”
        “He managed ta’ make it inside an’ slam the door, for what good it did him.  Not a second later that horse come crashin’ right through a picture winda’ an’ inta’ the livin’ room.  She ripped around tearin’ up furniture an’ kickin holes in walls.  He managed ta’ get past her an’ run down the hallway but she was so close he didn’t have time ta’ stop an’ unlock the back door.  He kept runnin’ ‘til she had him cornered in the bedroom.  She was huffin’ an’ snortin’, then she let go with a whinny that sounded more like the shriek of a banshee.  She reared up, bustin’ chunks o’ plaster outta’ the ceiling with her head, then she come crashin’ down an’ planted a hoof right inta’ his chest so forceful ya’ could hear his ribs snappin’ like dry twigs.  Much pain as he was in he still knew he had ta’ get outta’ there lest he get trampled ta’ death.  He didn’t have no choice but ta’ pick up a nightstand an’ heave it through a winda’, then go out after it.  Cut hisself all ta’ ribbons on the jagged pieces o’ glass still in the winda’ frame. ~~~
