#22 - The Idiot
For as far back as you can remember, you’ve never been very smart. The other kids in school made fun of you and said you were stupid. You never participated in sports with others because you couldn’t remember the rules. One time a doctor gave you some kind of test where you played games and looked at pictures, and he told your mom that your IQ was only 72. You didn’t know exactly what that meant, but looking at her face when she heard the news, you knew it was something bad. He even told your mom that you should be in some kind of special place where they could give you medicine and take care of you. Lucky for you though she didn’t think that was right, so she took care of you herself and started homeschooling so you wouldn’t be laughed at by the other children.
You always hoped that when you got older things would be different, but nothing has changed. People your own age still laugh at you and say how useless you are, and play mean jokes on you – like the one time you asked the girl at your mom’s office if she would like to go out with you for a cup of coffee. She said yes, that she’d love to. She never showed up at the restaurant, but you saw her across the street with some other women and men, pointing in your direction and laughing...
Within even the simplest mind lies a vast, uncharted landscape. Some contain deserts, other primeval forests, and still others, high mountains.
...and if you look carefully, most will contain the odd rabbit hole.
