#19 - The Quiet One

You were always one of few words. All through school, the other kids teased you for being so quiet, and the teachers finally stopped calling on you in class – if you answered at all it was generally a monosyllabic mumble. The few boyfriends you had given up trying to have any sort of conversation with you, and you reasoned that the ones who weren’t interested in conversation wouldn’t make very good boyfriends anyway.

Strangers mistook your silence for arrogance or stupidity. Some people in your neighborhood even spread the rumor that you were mentally retarded. Your parents loved you but generally ignored you, since trying to get more than three consecutive words out of you was a near impossibility.

Now, as an adult few things have changed. You work at a job that allows a minimum of communication with others. You sit alone in your cubicle, eat your lunch alone, and never carpool, fearing the close proximity to others would necessitate conversation...

 Until the dam breaks.
